Help Support a Devoted Mother and Caregiver Through Unimaginable Hardship Our dear friend Heather has spent the last several years doing everything she can to hold her family together through unimaginable challenges. Now, she needs our help. It all began over 13 years ago when her husband, Bret, was diagnosed with brain cancer (Glioblastoma) and given just 12 to 18 months to live. Against all odds, Bret defied that prognosis and continued fighting for his family. During those years, they were blessed with two beautiful children. But their journey wasn’t about to get any easier. ​ Their youngest son Roman was diagnosed with congenital myotonic muscular dystrophy at birth and later with autism. He is nonverbal, physically weak, partially immobile and faces many daily challenges that require extensive therapies and constant medical attention. Through it all, Heather and Bret have worked while managing countless doctor’s appointments, therapy sessions, and the complexities of raising a child with special needs. Then, on August 9th, tragedy struck again. Bret suffered a stroke that left him unable to use the left side of his body. He has been hospitalized ever since and will require a wheelchair, a walker, and long-term physical and occupational therapy when he returns home. A return-to-work date is not near, as he has a long journey of recovery ahead of him. Heather is now the sole provider, caregiver, mother, wife, nurse, advocate, and emotional backbone of her family. She has exhausted her time off from work, and despite everything on her shoulders, she still has to keep working to provide for her family. The emotional, physical, and financial toll is overwhelming — and the future is filled with uncertainty. This GoFundMe is to help ease some of the immediate financial strain on Heather and her family — for medical equipment, ongoing therapies, in-home care support, and basic living expenses while she navigates this new chapter. Every dollar raised will go directly toward helping her care for her husband and children during this incredibly difficult time.
